Youth Leadership Program

About

Founded in 2006 by the education committee of the Chamber, the JCYL initially began as a day-long leadership workshop for rising juniors in Jefferson Parish’s public, private and parochial schools.  Each school selected three students who demonstrated outstanding leadership and academic skills. The goal of the workshop was to reach out to the Parish’s youth leaders and present them with the opportunity to develop their leadership skills in hopes that they will return to Jefferson Parish and start careers here after college.

The program has been so successful that it now reaches over 40 students representing more than 13 schools in Jefferson.

During the school year, students participate in 8 thought-provoking day long sessions once a month that identify Jefferson Parish’s dynamics.  The program begins with a mandatory orientation and ends with a graduation.

The sessions include topics like law enforcement, economic development, education, health care, governance and community service.

In the past, students have had the opportunity to learn about the key issues from community leaders, activities and unique field trips. Past highlights include appearances by Jefferson Parish President, John Young; Jefferson Parish Public School Superintendent, Dr. Diane Roussel; Jefferson Parish Sheriff, Newel Normand and Jefferson Parish, Councilwoman Cynthia Lee- Sheng. Students were able to visit JEDCO, GNO, Inc., UNO’s Robert E. Nims Center in Elmwood, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Training Academy and the Jefferson Parish City Council.

Mission
