The Jefferson Chamber’s Annual Tour de Jefferson is right around the corner on Sunday, October 20! Make sure you register for this awesome, fun-filled social ride along the West Bank of Jefferson Parish! Read through this blog post to find out about some “rules of the road” when biking.
Five tips and rules to follow when biking:
1. Wear a Helmet
Helmets are standard when it comes to biking safety. We may not all want to wear them because, let’s be honest, they’re not exactly the most stylish, but they are important to ensure your safety.
2. Go with the Flow
When using any vehicle, biking included, you must always follow the rules of the road. Bicycles are required to travel in the same direction as the flow of traffic, meaning to always stay to the right side of the road. This is important to ensure that no pedestrians or other cyclists get in your way or you in the way of them.
3. Use Hand Signals
No one likes being cut off while driving. The same goes for biking! Make sure to use hand signals in order to not disrupt those behind you.
4. Do a Bike Check
Tour de Jefferson is an exciting event filled with beautiful scenery. It’s no secret that once the event begins all you want to do is go go go, but before taking off, you must do a quick bike check. These checks shouldn’t take longer than 10 minutes, and are very easy to complete! Check things such as tires, wheels, brakes, handlebars, seat height, chain and gears, etc.
5. Don’t Get Distracted
Always be aware of your surroundings. By listening to music, talking, texting, or just not paying attention you can cause a potential safety hazard for yourself and others. Go out and have fun along the route and finish at Parc De Familles, but just be sure to not get too distracted by all the fun!
